Compensation for stem cell donation

One of the core principles of stem cell donation is that it must be voluntary and therefore unpaid. This is legally mandated to protect the safety of both donors and patients. Among other things, this means that a stem cell donor cannot receive any material gains, either in cash or in kind, from the donation process. 

Reimbursement of expenses 

Of course, any expenses you incur during the donation process are reimbursed, such as travel expenses, your accommodation costs in the Netherlands, your absence from work, etcetera. In addition, you have the option of bringing a family member or friend with you to the Netherlands to assist you during the donation period. All expenses you as a donor incur in relation to the donation process plus the costs for one family member or friend are reimbursed. 

This reimbursement is arranged in consultation with you and on a reasonable basis. We ask that you keep all receipts and include these with your expenses claim.

Insurance

All medical procedures carried out in the Dutch hospital are covered by the hospital's liability insurance and the Matchis Foundation's supplementary donor complication insurance. The Matchis Foundation charges all costs incurred during the donation process to the health insurance provider of the patient to whom you are donating your stem cells. That means your own health insurance provider will not be billed for anything.
